How to Minimize Everyday Toxins for Pets

From the time we decide to own a pet, we become responsible for caring for that pet. Our dog or cat relies on us to keep them safe, healthy and happy, and we do our best to make sure they enjoy a full, fun, and healthy life. Yet sometimes we don’t realize that toxins lurk in our immediate environment that can potentially harm our furry friends. Because the toxins are invisible, it can be hard to identify them.

Some things that could be toxic to your pets

Cleaning and laundry products or air fresheners that we use in our home can negatively impact the health of our pets, especially related to conditions such as asthma.

If your dog or cat is roaming around in the backyard or further afield, then they may encounter outdoor toxins like pesticides, weed killers, motor oil or chemical salts used for de-icing in winter. Your dog or cat might lick their fur and ingest these toxins directly or they could drink water containing toxic runoff from cars or other machinery.
Some commercial pet foods and treats may also contain toxins not easily digestible by your pet.

Why are pets sensitive to toxins?

Because pets tend to be smaller than humans, they also have smaller kidneys and lungs and so their bodies have a more difficult time eliminating toxic substances. Our pets also don’t live as long as we do generally speaking so their bodies may not have time to get rid of the toxins they’ve ingested.

Pets also can’t communicate to us when they’re feeling ill, and they sometimes will try to hide it, especially cats. This is because in the wild an animal must appear strong so that they won’t be attacked by prey.

Toxins can affect your pet’s immune system, causing them to tire easily. Over time, the pet may develop tumours or cysts. If unchecked, these growths could worsen.

The upside is that our pets are resilient so if they’ve encountered any toxins in the environment, with good nutrients, exercise, and care and attention from you, an ailing pet can get better in no time.

How to make sure your pets are healthy and toxin-free

Some things to do to make sure your pet stays free of household toxins:

  • Keep your dog away from bug repellants that may be harmful
  • Don’t let your pet roam in an area where he may encounter toxic substances (i.e., construction site)
  • Don’t use perfumes, creams and other beauty products that may be harmful to your pet
  • Use natural cleaning and laundry products, and solvents whenever possible

Green products can do as good a job at cleaning our home (or clothes), will leave a pleasant smell in the air, and don’t have the potentially harmful toxins** in them that non-natural products have. Another option is to make natural cleaning products yourself using ingredients like vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda. If your dog does have toxins in her system then daily rigorous walks and/or runs will help to eliminate these from your pet’s organs and move waste more readily through the digestive tract.

Just like you would adjust your daily food intake and exercise routine to create the best chance for long-term health, so you would look to your pet’s diet and exercise to make sure she’s getting what she needs. Regular exercise is also good for your furry friend’s blood circulation and will help your pet to breathe better. If your dog isn’t accustomed to taking regular walks, BeOneBreed offers a range of dog leashes, harnesses, and collars to keep your beloved pooch safe and free from accidentally running out into traffic or getting lost in the woods. You can attach a leash, either to a dog collar, or to a harness.

As far as your furry feline goes, we have an assortment of cat trees, toys and scratchers to help your cat get the exercise he needs to stay healthy and resilient to harmful toxins.

In terms of eating well, good nutrition helps the body–whether human or pet–to eliminate potential toxins more readily and build and maintain a strong immune system.

Why buy from a Canadian-made company?

There are several online stores that sell dog beds, and it’s hard to know what you’re getting. Especially since you can’t reach into your computer or phone and have your pet test it out.

We may be biased, but we believe that buying locally designed products for your pet counts for something. BeOneBreed gives you the assurance that the piece was designed by actual professional designers who are also pet owners, and passionate about providing the best quality products for pets.

BeOneBreed designs pet products for optimal comfort, wellbeing, flavour and fun. When you buy from a big pet store or department store it’s hard to know if you’re getting the quality you deserve. We’re a cohesive and caring team and we take that extra care to get it right.

We offer our customers a 30-day warranty on many of our products and an online secure and fast purchase. A proudly Canadian company, we’re passionate about our pets–and yours, too!
